Yanran is part of the inaugural class of Kessler Presidential Scholars, a program in support of first-generation students at Cornell. 

When asked what it means to be a first-generation college student, Yanran said, "Being a first-generation college student has many personal meanings to me. My parents always told me that they had never dared to dream about pursuing higher dream, because they had to help their parents make ends meet. I’m attending college carrying not only my dream, but also my parents’ dreams. Being a first-generation college student also means being a role-model for my younger sisters."
