Kalin is part of the inaugural class of Kessler Presidential Scholars, a program supporting first-generation college students at Cornell.

When asked what it means to be a first-generation college student, Kalin said, "Being first generation means you're first at everything. Although it may sound promising to yell 'Hey, Mama! I'm first!', the phrase itself doesn't resonate very well in the context of navigating college and how to succeed in a rigorous environment. Despite its inherent challenges, the triumphs make every loss worth it."
