Student Leadership Practice Inventory

The Student Leadership Practice Inventory (SLPI) is a tool used to assess and develop the leadership skills of college and university students. Developed by James Kouzes and Barry Posner, the SLPI is based on the authors' widely acclaimed Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership model, which includes:

  • Model the Way - setting an example by demonstrating personal values and beliefs
  • Inspire a Shared Vision - creating a compelling vision of the future and enlisting others in it
  • Challenge the Process - seeking out new and innovative ways of doing things
  • Enable Others to Act - fostering collaboration and empowering others to contribute
  • Encourage the Heart - recognizing and celebrating the contributions of others
The SLPI can be used by individuals or groups, and is often used in leadership development programs or courses. The results can be used to guide coaching or mentoring, set leadership development goals, or measure the impact of leadership development programs. The SLPI has been used in a wide range of settings, from undergraduate leadership courses to graduate business programs, and has been found to be a valid and reliable measure of leadership behaviors.
