What do people say about CTLC programs?
"We sought participation to build a sense of community and a team-like culture in the group. I thought the Cornell Outdoor Experience would be a great way for lab members to see each other in different challenging, but fun and professionally inconsequential, situations. I also thought it would be a great opportunity for students to express leadership qualities (as in the initial jump rope exercise). Finally, doing something as a group outside and away from our normal spaces of interaction was a great way to wipe the slate clean and build camaraderie.
"As a leader of a lab, it was a great opportunity to observe and learn more about my team members. Seeing how they respond to stress, collaborate with others, and engage outside of their comfort zones was extremely useful. I have since used that information to refine and tailor my leadership to match the individuals in the group. I noticed a marked increase in collegiality and improved tenor of interactions in the lab after the experience. Moreover, the lab members reported enjoying the event very much."
-Karl Lewis, Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering, Cornell University
" It allowed us the opportunity to be vulnerable with each other, support each other and to feel the team support during these vulnerable moments. This felt empowering as an individual and as a team. It also highlighted some individual strengths that allowed these team members to feel better about their contributions to the team."
-Sonya Cunningham, Cornell Engineering
"Our EMBA programs trust in CTLC events because they provide a few main benefits. Our students are adults who are accomplished and driven, but the CTLC provides a safe environment to remove titles and barriers, helping students to open up and learn about themselves and their classmates. For example, the outdoor setting, the comfortable clothing, and the thinking challenges help students to open up about who they are, what they care about, and how they think and communicate.
"We see our students begin to build a foundation of trust that serves them well at the beginning (and throughout) their 2-year MBA journey. The students on each learning team leave the challenge course with trust, goodwill, and an understanding of how their teammates communicate ideas, solve problems, and lead/follow during activities. This sets up the teams to continue building trust and to use best-practices like creating a plan for an activity (e.g., an academic group project) and for debriefing what went well and what didn’t go well after the activity. Many students remember fondly the time they spend together on the challenge course."
