The purpose of Loving House is to create an environment that protects and supports Cornell University's community of LGBTQIA+ students. Loving House is an intentional residential space that is inclusive to all identities to foster an environment of close-knit support and safety. We strive to empower residents through thoughtful community building to be a part of a space that is unconditionally accepting. Loving House embraces honest dialogues around the nuances of sex, sexuality, and gender identity and expression through the lens of community, cultural competency, and an understanding of queer identities. These dialogues will highlight the ways in which systems intersect and the way in which they shape and inform the lives of LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies.

Community features: 

  • Open to undergraduate first-year, transfer, and upperlevel students 
  • 30 residents 
  • Located on North Campus within Mews Hall 
  • Singles and doubles 
  • TV lounge, study room, kitchen facilities on the floor, and a laundry room on the first floor 
  • Bathrooms are all-gender 
  • Bedrooms contain, for each occupant: an extra-long twin bed, a closet and a bureau (or wardrobe/bureau combination), a desk and desk chair, a desk lamp, and floor carpeting 
  • Wireless Internet access

Mews Hall rooms have system controlled air circulation. Hallways, main areas, and bedrooms are carpeted.

Faculty involvement:

Lori Leonard, Professor in the Department of Development Sociology, is the Faculty-in-Residence for the LGBTQ+ community and Mews Hall. She lives in an apartment in the building with her partner, Siba N’Zatioula Grovogui, Faculty Fellow in Residence and Professor in Africana Studies, and regularly spends time with student residents. The LGBTQ+ community also will have Faculty and Community Fellows that provide students with opportunities to explore and cultivate their academic, intellectual, and cultural interests. You will find them attending events in your building, eating with students in the dining room, and leading on and off campus trips to lectures, plays, films, concerts, and regional points of interest. 

How to apply for residency: 

Rising junior and rising senior students may select to live in a program house as part of the fall Housing Selection process while rising sophomores can select during their General Room Selection process in the spring. New students can indicate their preference to live in a program house on their New Student Housing Application.
