Mikayla is part of the inaugural class of Kessler Presidential Scholars, a program in support of first-generation students at Cornell. 

When asked what it means to be a first-generation student, Mikayla said, "Being a first-generation students means that in my family, I am the first to accomplish something that no one else has and I am proving that it is possible for someone like me to do this."
