Outdoor Odyssey and PE Programs New Hires

Congratulations on being hired!  Once you have officially received an offer of employment from a Cornell Outdoor Education representative, please complete the steps below.  Note that at the moment we are proceeding as if the spring semester will occur as normal. If that is not the case, we will contact you directly with alternate plans.

STEP 1 - (Odyssey and PE Staff) CONTACT INFORMATION: Fill out the New Hire Information Form

COE Programs uses a list serve to communicate with the staff. After you enter your information, you should start to see messages about staff training, important dates, events and opportunities. (Only full time staff post to this list.) Also, even though this is the start of your COE career, we're already thinking about after you graduate. COE has 40 years worth of alumni all over the country. We do our best to facilitate communication between this ever-growing community of adventurers.

STEP 2 - (PE Staff Only) CHOOSING YOUR COURSE: Fill out the Spring 2021 Dreamsheet

COE uses an on-line resource to collect information about what courses you'd like to teach. The on-line "Dreamsheet," as we call it, will provide you with a list of all the courses COE offers. Indicate what classes you are interested / able to teach next semester. If you are not sure of our class schedule, just make your best guess. A guess is better than no information at all! There is also a text box for special considerations you'd like to send our way. The compiled information is forwarded to the program coordinators. They assemble the teaching teams for next semester.

If you will be a TA, stop by the COE main office and see the front office manager about filling out a volunteer form.

If you are becoming a level 1 instructor you must stop by the COE main office and fill out a student employee appointment form and must setup an appointment to complete the I-9 process with the COE office manager. You must complete these steps in order to be paid. If you have any questions about this process feel free to reach out to Danni Ford, COE Office Manager, at

Community members and Ithaca College students should come to the COE main office to fill out an I-9. Please bring one of the listed acceptable documents. If you have any questions about what documents to bring please reach out to Danni Ford, COE Office Manager, at You must complete these steps in order to be paid.

STEP 4 - (Odyssey and PE Staff) Attend NEW STAFF ORIENTATION

All new hires for both PE programs and Odyssey are required to attend the two sessions of New Staff Orientation. You'll learn where to get keys, how to check out gear, and some basics of teaching and risk management. Please fill out the NEW Staff Orientation sign up form. We will let you know to what session you are assigned.

STEP 5 - (Odyssey and PE Staff) STAFF MANUAL: Download and peruse the Underground Guide to COE

It is somewhat out of date, but we're working on revising it!

You are here because you have a passion for the outdoors and are committed to teaching the best COE course ever. We are psyched to have you, so congratulations and welcome to the team!
