COE Summer Disc Golf

Disc Golf is the sport of throwing plastic discs through the woods into metal baskets. Like traditional "ball" golf, your goal is to get your disc into the basket in the fewest throws possible, over the course of 9 or 18 "holes." Unlike traditional golf, disc golf typically takes place in public parks, forests, and unusual settings with minimal access fees and lots of obstacles. The game is easy to learn, but may take a lifetime to master!
In this enrichment course, you'll learn the basic shots - driving, approaching, putting - in a variety of styles - forehand, backhand, rollers, turbo - and how to choose from a variety of discs based on your skill and what the shot calls for. You'll learn the rules of the game, how to navigate the golf course, and how to find courses all over the world. We'll play on Cornell's own short course and visit a couple of other courses in the area.
What makes learning disc golf so fun is how quickly you can improve while still laughing at the wild throws along the way. One hole you feel like a pro as the disc glides perfectly toward the basket, and the next it’s sailing into the trees. But that’s all part of the game. With each round you start to figure out your style, celebrate the great shots, and shrug off the not-so-great ones—all while enjoying the outdoors and the laid-back vibe that makes disc golf such a blast.
Each participant will receive their own starter 3-pack of discs to play with and keep when the course is over.

How to dress and what to bring to class
Dressing for disc golf in the summer is all about staying cool, comfortable, and ready to move. Lightweight athletic clothing works best since you’ll be walking the course and throwing frequently. A breathable T-shirt or moisture-wicking athletic shirt paired with athletic shorts or lightweight pants is ideal. Since courses often run through grassy areas and woods, many players prefer shorts that allow movement but still offer some protection from brush. Comfortable athletic shoes or trail shoes are important too—you’ll be walking quite a bit and sometimes on uneven terrain.
Bring a bottle of water and a small backpack or bag to carry your water, layers, and discs.
Sun protection is also key when you’re out on the course for a few hours. A hat or cap helps keep the sun out of your eyes while you line up throws, and sunglasses can make it easier to track the disc in bright light. Bringing sunscreen and possibly a small towel for sweat can make the round much more comfortable. The goal is simple: wear something breathable, flexible, and durable so you can focus on having fun and improving your throws.
We live in an area where you will be exposed to bugs and ticks, plan accordingly with bug spray if you wish, and do a thorough tick check when you get home.
