How do I become a Peer Navigator?

Peer Navigator is a student position with FGLI Student Support. Workday applications open in the Spring semester and are announced through FGLI Student Support’s official communication channels such as Instagram and the newsletter. Peer Navigators are contracted to work one full academic year from the fall semester through the spring semester.

What are the benefits of becoming a Peer Navigator?

Flexible, Enriching, and Empathetic Working Environment
FGLI believes and understands that Peer Navigators are students first. Peer Navigators are often first-generation and/or low-income students themselves so FGLI approaches this program with structured systems that provide a flexible, enriching, and empathetic working environment.

Professional Development, Leadership, and DEIB Training
Peer Navigators are trained every semester in professional development, leadership, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging workshops. Peer Navigators are then well equipped to empower their first-gen peers and also themselves.

Passion Projects
Peer Navigators are given opportunities to program their own passion projects that address a need or issue in the FGLI community and connects back to the mission, values, and goals of FGLI Student Support. These passion projects could take the form of an educational workshop, community event, social media campaign, or other form. Peer Navigators are given full autonomy in conceptualizing, coordinating, budgeting, and executing their passion projects with structured support from project management tools or software, structured weekly supervision, and weekly team meetings from their supervisor.

Field Trips
Peer Navigators go on multiple field trips throughout the academic year to better understand on-campus resources. FGLI understands that although Cornell University has a vast amount of resources available, it can be very overwhelming and differ greatly from what is posted online. By visiting these resources themselves, Peer Navigators can provide more accurate information than what online research yields. Past field trips have included Cornell Botanical Garden, Johnson Museum, Anabel’s Grocery, and more.

How much are Peer Navigators paid?

As many of our Peer Navigators are first-generation and/or low-income students, FGLI Student Support is committed to providing enriching professional development opportunities and appropriate compensation.
