David Honan
David Honan has served as Cornell University’s Associate Vice President of Public Safety since April of 2021. Originally from Rochester, New York, Honan joined the Cornell University Police Department in 1995. Progressing through the ranks as an officer, sergeant and lieutenant, Deputy Chief, and Chief of Police. AVP Honan is passionate about building bridges and meaningful connections between public safety practitioners, law enforcement and all members of our community and is dedicated to actively pursuing opportunities to meet, collaborate and develop relationships between public safety staff, police and students, as well as with the staff, faculty and visitors who come to campus.AVP Honan is currently working the development of the newly formed Public Safety division which includes the University 911 center, police, Cornell EMS, Emergency Management, Access Control and Clery compliance. He serves as the lead on the University Incident Leadership Team and a member of the University Threat Assessment Team. He is a certified police instructor and police firearms instructor. He has also attended and taught many classes in police management, community engagement, effective investigations, victim advocacy and diversity. He is a graduate of Cornell’s Leading Cornell and Harold D. Craft leadership development programs.
Chief Honan is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a concentration in criminal and juvenile justice from Ithaca College.
