Housing Search Process
We’ve compiled a variety of resources, guides, and checklists to support you in your housing search and help you find a comfortable, affordable living situation that fits your needs.
Whether you are an undergraduate, graduate, or professional student, your first step in securing housing is to assess your needs and preferences. Consider factors such as proximity to campus, budget, type of housing (shared, single, apartment, or house), and the duration of your stay. Additionally, think about amenities, neighborhood safety, and access to transportation. Understanding these personal requirements will help guide your search, whether you're looking at university-managed housing or exploring off-campus options. Taking the time to identify what is most important to you will ensure that you find a living arrangement that supports your academic and personal life.
Key Steps in the Housing Search Process:
1. Prepare
Before beginning your housing search, reflect carefully on essentials and preferences. These may include transportation access, air conditioning, accessibility needs, laundry, pets, necessary amenities, etc.
Explore Ithaca neighborhoods to determine which areas match your lifestyle.
2. Search
Take your time reviewing all available options. Your preparation will come in handy during the housing search. Utilize our Off Campus Housing Marketplace and resources to guide your search for the right apartment. The Off Campus Housing Marketplace is a College Pads listing service, which provides self-service property listing for landlords and a smooth experience for students looking for housing.
3. Signing the Lease
Signing a lease is an important step when securing a rental. Don’t hesitate to ask questions! A good landlord appreciates a responsible tenant and will be willing to provide information that can help you make an informed decision. Key questions for landlords include, how long they’ve been a landlord, how many properties they own, who handles repairs, and how tenants should communicate both typically and in emergencies. First-year and second-year undergraduate students should not sign a lease unless they have an approved exemption from Housing and Residential Life. Please refer to the University's Residential Policy for additional details.
