Room Inspection

Moving In

All students checking in to Cornell housing may review and submit a Room Inventory & Condition (RIC) form within 48 hours of moving in, to report the condition of their room, suite, or apartment. Students are responsible for damage to their room assignment that is observed at checkout, but not recorded at check-in. If you choose not to complete the form within 48 hours of checking in, the form will be locked and the information on the form will be binding.

Signing your RIC form indicates that you have inspected your room and gives you the opportunity to record the results and add comments about the condition of your room.

Undergraduate Students

Please use the instructions below to review and sign your RIC form online.

  1. Log in to the Room Inventory & Condition system using your Cornell NetID and password. (If you need assistance with your NetID or password, visit cit.cornell.edu/identity or call 607-255-8990.)

  2. At the welcome screen, click "Edit" to begin reviewing your RIC. Your room inspection information will appear on the next page. There is also information about how to contact us should you encounter problems.
  3. Carefully review the list of inspection points and their associated conditions. Update them so they accurately reflect your room's condition.
  4. Use the "Condition Notes" field to describe the condition of an inspection point. If you have urgent concerns, contact your residential staff.
  5. Click "Set Inspection Complete" to finish your RIC. You may then log off.

Graduate and Professional Students

You will use a paper RIC form to review the condition of your room/apartment, which will be given to you during your check-in process. Please contact your service center staff or Graduate Residence Manager with any questions.

Moving Out

When you move out, your RIC form is updated by your residential staff to record any damage to your room, suite, or apartment accrued during your occupancy.

You will be charged for damage, missing furniture, items and keys, uncleaned units, and belongings left behind. Charges not attributed to a specific roommate will be split equally among all roommates who share the space (i.e., roommates who share a suite or apartment will only be responsible for charges associated with their bedroom and with common areas in the unit). Students can appeal damage charges or take responsibility for damage billed to a roommate or suitemate using the Residential Damage Appeal Form.

DAMAGE CHARGE FAQs

Will I be contacted if I have any damage charges?
Yes, if you have been charged for any damage to your room, suite, or apartment, you will receive an email from Housing & Residential Life.

I have reviewed my RIC form, and I still have questions.
Specific questions about your move-out inspection should be directed to your Residence Hall Director or House Assistant Dean.

Why am I being charged for damage caused by my roommate/suitemate?
Charges for damage that is not attributed to a specific roommate are divided among all roommates who share the space (i.e., roommates who share a suite or apartment will only be responsible for charges associated with their bedroom and with common areas in the unit).

Documentation of Damages: It is your responsibility to get written documentation from your roommate(s) for any specific damages they caused, so you are not charged. Roommates wishing to take responsibility for any damage must notify their Residence Hall Director or House Assistant Dean by 5:00pm on the last day of classes. All room occupants should be copied on this email. Damage responsibility not identified in writing will result in roommates being charged equally for any damage.

I believe I was unfairly charged for damage. How can I appeal a charge?
Damage appeals may be submitted on the damage appeal form until June 30.

Why can't I appeal a charge?
Appeals are only accepted from residents. Written damage appeals are not accepted after June 30 (please see above). Also, if you failed to use either the "Checkout with Appointment" or the "Non-Appointment Checkout" processes recommended to you in the Closing Notice you received, then you forfeited your right to appeal any damage charges to your room.
