Hu Shih Hall is a modern residence hall that offers students a welcoming and highly connected community within Cornell's North Campus. Designed for students who are eager to meet new people, explore new interests, and immerse themselves in campus life, Hu Shih Hall provides a supportive environment where friendships are formed, ideas are exchanged, and students build a strong foundation their Cornell journey.

More About Hu Shih Hall

The hall is named in honor of Hu Shih, one of Cornell's most influential alumni (1914) and a renowned Chinese scholar, diplomat, and reformer. His global impact and commitment to cross-cultural understanding continue to reflect Cornell's international and intellectual traditions.

Hu Shih Hall's contemporary design encourages students to move beyond their rooms and engage with the broader residential community. Featuring single, double, and quad room options, along with spacious lounges, study areas, and nearby cafés, the hall promotes collaboration, social interaction, and academic success. Programs hosted by the Residence Hall Director, Faculty-in-Residence, and Resident Advisors help residents connect with peers, discover campus resources, and explore a wide range of interests.

  • Corridor-style with bedrooms directly off a hallway. Floors are mixed gender.
  • Communal bathrooms shared by a varying number of residents of the area. Privacy option bathrooms are available.
  • Bedrooms contain, for each occupant: an extra-long twin bed, a wardrobe and three drawer bureau, a desk and desk chair, a wastebasket, and recycling bin
  • Five study spaces located in the common area of the community; four have a white board and a TV
  • Six shared kitchen spaces with stove tops and microwaves; one oven located in the Chui Lounge on the first floor

Faculty Involvement

Eilyan Bitar, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is the Faculty-in-Residence for Hu Shih Hall. He lives in an apartment in the building with her partner, Adrienne Bitar, Faculty Fellow in Residence and Lecturer in American Studies, and regularly spends time with student residents of the Hu Shih community. 

Hu Shih Hall also has a number of Faculty and Community Fellows that provide students with opportunities to explore and cultivate their academic, intellectual, and cultural interests. You will find them attending events in your building, eating with students in the dining room, and leading on and off campus trips to lectures, plays, films, concerts, and regional points of interest.
