How did you hear about your campus job?
I was interested in a job that required working with computers and having some computer knowledge. I knew Tech Connect was located within the Cornell Store, so I looked at their website and saw this position.
What are some of your responsibilities at your campus job?
I have several customer service responsibilities, including helping students choose new laptops and coordinating the repair of customers’ devices. I’m often the first touchpoint for their tech needs in the Cornell Store.
What made you choose this opportunity on campus? What was it that set it apart from other jobs?
I was looking for an opportunity that allowed me to work with computers, since I’m a Computer Science major. The Cornell Store seemed like a good place to work because I’d get to interact with different people and assist with various computer-related tasks.
What are your top three skills developed in this role?
1. Communication — Communication is key in my role. I’ve learned how to clearly explain the differences between devices and how they’ll help customers with their specific needs.
I’ve also learned how to explain computer issues to customers and the best repair plan. For instance, students will come to Tech Connect after spilling something on their computer, and it’s important to communicate what internal and/or external damage happened and how to fix it. That helps them set expectations for how long the repairs take and how much they cost.
2. Critical Thinking — I use my critical thinking skills to evaluate situations and identify the best solutions based on customer needs. An example of this is when customers stop in and aren’t sure which device they should get. I gather information, like what they’ll use the device for, and apply that to my knowledge of the devices we have. From there, I think about which device meets their needs and recommend the best solution.
3. Professionalism — I’ve learned how important professionalism is on the job. You may not fully agree with all the elements within a project, but at the end of the day, you have to think about what’s in the best interest of your customers. For example, in the beginning of the spring semester, my team reorganized the walls that hold some of our accessories. Some of my teammates and I had different visions of what the wall would look like, but we were able to respectfully talk it out and come up with a design that worked for the customers.
What’s your favorite thing about your campus job?
I really like the positive atmosphere. I have great co-workers and enjoy talking with them when I have downtime. I also enjoy sharing my love of technology with customers and helping them find the best solution for their needs.
Which experiences in your campus job do you think will help you in your career after Cornell?
Learning how to communicate with my superiors will definitely help me. I’d like to pursue a career in software engineering after Cornell and I know I’ll have to properly communicate my work and its outcomes to a manager within that space. I’ve established that skill within this role and can enhance it once I enter the workforce.
How has working on campus shaped your student experience at Cornell and helped you grow as a person?
It’s given me valuable insight into what a working environment is like, from collaborating with teammates to establishing a good work-life balance. I’ve gotten valuable experience outside the classroom, which has helped create a well-rounded student experience.
What advice do you have for other students interested in campus jobs?
Find something that you’re interested in. In my experience, having a job that aligns with my interests has made the experience enjoyable and rewarding.
Also, try to find something that helps you achieve the right work-life balance. For instance, if you need some flexibility with your schedule, try finding a job that allows you to work flexible hours so your needs will be met.
