Informal Recreation Policies

General Policies

ID Policies & Affiliation

  • All participants must possess a valid Cornell ID Card or must have an approved pass with a matching form of photo ID.
  • Recreation Staff may request ID at any point.
  • Day Passes are available to purchase by Cornell Students on the behalf of their guests who are of at least 18 years of age
  • Refusal to show required identification to Recreation Staff can result in dismissal from the Court, and additional reports submitted to pertinent offices at Cornell University.

Clothing Policies

  • Participants must wear a top that covers the chest and midriff at all times
  • Participants must have clean, dry, appropriate footwear on at all times.
  • Noyes Indoor Court requires all patrons (spectators included) to carry in a separate pair of clean, dry athletic shoes to change into when on the court. 

Equipment & Food/Beverage Policies 

  • Roller blades, skateboards, bicycles and all other forms of mobile transportation are never permitted in the Courts.
  • Soccer balls, tennis balls, baseballs, lacrosse balls, etc., are not permitted in the Courts.
  • No food of any kind is allowed into the Courts and all drinks must be in non-glass resealable containers.

Audio/Video Policies 

  • Participants cannot play, and or broadcast, audible media and music.
  • Participants cannot capture, or stream, photos and videos of any kind.

Altercation Policies

  • Physical altercations are handled by the Cornell Police department, during which the altercation can be investigated as a physical assault

Site-Specific Policies

Helen Newman Hall Courts

Court 1 

  • Basketball is available during the listed times on the Informal Court Hours schedule
  • Court 1 cannot be reserved by participants, Clubs, Student Groups, Greek Life, Official/Unofficial Teams
  • Court 1 is unavailable during use for Physical Education courses, Group Fitness classes, Intramural Sports, or by Cornell Recreation Services staff. There are rare instances when the Court can be unavailable without advance prior notice should there be a need to relocate any of the above programs/services to Court 1

Court 2

  • Volleyball and Badminton are available according to their listed priority times on the Informal Court Hours schedule.
  • Either Volleyball or Badminton can be played outside of their listed priority time if no participants are present for the scheduled activity. Should any participant arrive for the scheduled activity, the game must end with the next point and participants must begin taking down and returning equipment.
  • Court 2 cannot be reserved by participants
  • Court 2 is unavailable during use for Physical Education courses, Group Fitness classes, Intramural Sports, or by Cornell Recreation Services staff. There are rare instances when the Court can be unavailable without advance prior notice should there be a need to relocate any of the above programs/services to Court 2

Noyes Community Rec Center Court

  • Please refer to the informal court times for priority scheduling on the Court.
  • The activity featured during the scheduled time will always have priority, even if another activity is already occurring.
  • The Noyes Court is unavailable during use for Intramural Sports, or by Cornell Recreation Services staff. There are rare instances when the Court can be unavailable without advance prior notice should there be a need to relocate any of the above programs/services under Cornell Physical Education or Recreation Services
  • Noyes Indoor Court requires all patrons (spectators included) to carry in and display a separate pair of clean, dry athletic shoes to change into when on the court. 

Activity Policy

Basketball 

  • Basketball games automatically become challenge games when there are two teams of five on the Court and five more players have arrived to play
  • Full Court challenge games always have priority over half Court games
  • During a challenge game, the game is played to 11 points
  • The losing team must rotate out
  • If a team wins three games in a row, they must rotate out
  • Basketballs are available for Equipment Checkout and must be returned when finished
  • Recreation Staff are allowed to close the Court if any participant does not abide by the informal recreation policies.

Badminton 

  • All badminton games become challenge games if all 4 badminton stations are in use and others are waiting to play.
  • Challenge games are to 21 points with a point being scored on each serve. Matches will not be played in sets.
  • After a team wins three challenges in a row, they must rotate off that Court. The next two challenging teams then take the Court. 
  • Players must setup and return posts after use:
    • Helen Newman Hall: To the rack in the Southeast corner of Court 2
    • Noyes Community Rec Center: To the Northeast corner of the gym
  • Badminton racquets, birdies, and nets are available for Equipment Checkout and must be returned when finished.
  • Recreation Staff are allowed to close the Court if any participant does not abide by the informal recreation policies.

Volleyball 

  • All Volleyball games become challenge games if the Court is in use by two teams, and others are waiting to play.
  • Challenge games are to 15 points, win by 2, with an 18-point hard cap. Points are scored on each serve.
  • After a team wins three challenges in a row, they must rotate off that Court. The next two challenging teams then take the Court. 
  • Players must setup and return posts after use:
    • Helen Newman Hall: To the rack in the Southeast corner of Court 2
    • Noyes Community Rec Center: To the Northeast corner of the gym
  • Volleyballs, and a net are available for Equipment Checkout and must be returned when finished.
  • Recreation Staff are allowed to close the Court if any participant does not abide by the informal recreation policies.
