Out of this World Campaign
Let's Get Out of This World
The two-week Out of This World is ending this weekend. We've tracked our movement minutes and set out on an intergalactic odyssey. Monday 6/22 will be the final day to submit minutes (see below for more details).
Collective Minutes
Total minutes as of 9:30am FRIDAY 6/19:
155,806
We've talked a lot these past two weeks about traveling at light-speed. Current scientific theories tell us that time & space are relative, and that the faster you travel, the slower time moves for you. Therefore, we'd age much slower than we would on Earth. For every year that we'd hypothetically travel at light-speed, 22 years would pass on Earth.
Our current minutes add up to 3.55 months. If we were indeed travelling at the speed of light, 6.5 Earth years would pass by in that time!

Out of This World Cornell Connections
Did you know a Cornell-affiliated observatory in Chile just got a new telescope? The Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST) was recently installed at the Cerro Chajnantor. Sitting just above 18,000 feet in the Atacama Desert, the location is ideal for capturing images of interstellar objects.

Space Factoid of the Day
If you want to continue your intergalactic odyssey, there are many space museums and planetariums to explore.
- If you are in the Ithaca area, stop by the Sciencenter and the Sagan Planet Walk
- In the Finger Lakes Region, check out the Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) in Syracuse or the Rochester Museum and Science Center & Strasenburgh Planetarium
- In Western NY, try the Buffalo Museum of Science or the Niagara Aerospace Museum
- And if you are downstate, there’s the Intrepid Museum, Hayden Planetarium, and the Chalsty Planetarium
- If you work remotely or are traveling this summer, it is likely that one is nearby. You might check out this planetarium list or even plan an aerospace road trip!
