Dr. Michael Loeffelman (he/him) joined Cornell University's First-Generation & Low-Income Support Student Support in January 2026 and currently serves as Assistant Director for Student Empowerment, within the Centers for Student Equity, Empowerment, and Belonging. In this role, he supports initiatives that foster belonging, student engagement, and holistic success for first-generation and low-income students. He oversees key programs including the Access Fund, Swipe Out Hunger, and the FGLI Peer Navigator Program, and collaborates with campus partners to connect students with resources and opportunities that support their academic, personal, and professional development.

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Loeffelman has worked in higher education for more than 15 years. He began his career as an AmeriCorps member at the University of Charleston and later earned a Master of Education from the University of Virginia. He completed his Ph.D. in Curriculum Studies at Purdue University in 2020, with a research focus on higher education and masculinity.

Prior to joining Cornell, Dr. Loeffelman held positions at the Rhode Island School of Design, East Carolina University, Purdue University, and Miami University in Ohio. His experience spans career services, academic advising, residence life, community engagement, student conduct, student organizations, honors programs, and admissions. He is passionate about helping students navigate the university experience, engage in reflective learning, and build a strong sense of purpose and belonging during their time in college.
