Dates of Employment: Annually, August-May with option to continue through June and July.  Auditions are held September through November, February through June

Rate of Pay:  $20.00/hour and up, based on experience.  Includes membership to Cornell Fitness Centers (must teach minimum of one class per week during schedule period)

Purpose or Role of the Position Within the Organization:

The Cornell Fitness Centers Group Fitness Program is seeking Cornell University students and individuals from the Ithaca community to develop and lead cardiovascular/strength, mind-body, and Spinning® fitness classes. Instructors must feel comfortable in front of a group and be able to teach proper form and alignment for movements and exercises dynamically.

Duties/Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Arrive to class ~10 minutes early with music cued, class planned, and dressed for teaching.
  • Ensure safety of participants by recognizing general signs and symptoms of physical exertion.
  • Teach a safe, effective and fun class to all participants.
  • General knowledge of current exercise recommendation principles.
  • Ensure safety of participants by reporting any facility problems.
  • Fill out accident/incident reports when necessary.
  • Answer questions regarding class format and other related exercise concerns.
  • Stay for ~10 minutes after class, to put away props and equipment, lock up closets and stereo, and be available to participants.
  • Responsible for appropriate use of all Group Fitness related equipment.
  • Check for wristbands and record class attendance for each class.
  • Mentorship of new instructors if applicable.
  • Wear appropriate clothing that allows participants to see proper form and alignment.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and training sessions.
  • Check email regularly.

Required Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

  • Current American Red Cross CPR/AED
  • Current American Red Cross Standard First Aid
  • One nationally recognized fitness certification or other related fitness certification that is current (not-expired).  Examples include AFAA, ACE, ACSM, Spinning®, ZUMBA® Fitness, 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training, or other related teaching certification.
