It's Kosher! Cornell Dairy now offers kosher ice cream

Cornell Dining is pleased to announce that the Cornell Dairy Plant is the first University dairy plant in the nation to offer kosher ice cream! The Cornell Dairy Bar in Stocking Hall has now been set up to serve kosher dairy products. In addition to Cornell's own ice cream, all of the toppings served along with the ice cream at the Cornell Dairy Bar are now kosher.

Join us at the Cornell Dairy Bar Wednesday, October 26th from 2pm-5pm to celebrate this exciting achievement.

For the ice cream to be certified each ingredient, food additive, and processing aid used in its production must be approved by a kosher auditor of the Orthodox Union. In addition, the equipment had to be cleaned and then subjected to equipment kosherization under the supervision of a rabbi. This required some equipment to be flushed with boiling water.

Dr. Joe Regenstein, Professor Emeritus of Food Science and Head of the Cornell Kosher and Halal Food Initiative, worked with the management of the Cornell Dairy Plant and Cornell Dining staff to help execute the initiative, and bring kosher ice cream to campus.

"This development is very exciting as it represents another step in Cornell's commitment to diversity," says Dr. Regenstein. "Serving the food needs of many different students is an important part of creating a caring community," he adds.

To celebrate, and to generate awareness for Cornell's certified kosher ice cream, the entire campus is invited to the Dairy Bar on October 26th from 2pm-5pm. Arrive early to take advantage of the following:

  • The first 150 customers get a FREE sundae cup with any purchase.
  • $1 off any hot fudge or caramel sundaes or floats from 2pm-5pm.
