PE 1663 - Ropes Course Programming

Students learn and apply the technical, safety, leadership and facilitation skills essential to safe and effective ropes course programming. Technical skills such as knot tying, challenge course belaying, and more will be taught during this course. Students will learn low ropes team integration activities as well as high ropes facilitation skills. This course can contribute towards completion of the CU Leadership Minor.

Course fee: $200. Students learn about leadership, teamwork and pushing past perceived limits during this 3-day course at Cornell's Hoffman Challenge Course. We meet on campus for the first class to get to know one another and do some group activities that will prepare students for the full days ahead. The 2nd class is a full day of low elements activities that involve outdoor team challenges like building log bridges, balancing on cables and swinging on ropes. The 3rd class is on the high ropes course where students rely on trust and teamwork to climb up 10-60 feet in the air, swinging/balancing, jumping off platforms and ziplining. Course will be taught at the Hoffman Challenge Course, transportation provided. Drop Deadline: Monday, January 22, 2024. Students will be responsible for the course fee and assessed a $50 late drop fee if they do not drop by the deadline. PE 1664 - Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking is for those who want to learn the skills to ride a bike on single track trails. Skills on the bike include body position, braking, shifting, descending, climbing and navigating natural terrain such as rocks, roots and logs. You will also learn to complete a bike safety check, change a flat tire and navigate on the trails. Don't have a bike? Don't fret! COE can lend you a bike during class days for an additional $60 fee.

PE 1666 - Bike Touring

Bike Touring is for those who want to learn how to travel self-supported by bike. This course will cover bike touring equipment use, camping skills, route planning and bike maintenance. Skills on the bike will include road riding safety and riding with a loaded bike. Classes will include rides of 5-15 miles and the course will culminate in a two-day bike tour with overnight camping. The weekend tour may include up to 30 miles per day.

Other classes will first meet at Bartels Hall and then travel to other areas around the Fingerlakes Region. Transportation is provided for classes off campus. There will be an overnight 5/4 into 5/5. PE 1668 - Recreational Biking

Recreational Biking is for those who want to explore Ithaca and Tompkins county under their own power by bike. Roads and bike paths will lead you right from campus to waterfalls, scenic views and ice cream! In addition to rides of 8-15 miles each day, you'll learn how to take care of your bike and do some basic repairs. Rides will not be fast paced, but Ithaca has lots of hills so reasonable physical fitness and the ability to comfortably ride a bike are essential.
