PE 1601 - Backcountry Cooking
Tired of only eating Ramen on trips? Do you wonder about the difference between powdered cheese and real cheese? Ever wanted to learn how to make true gourmet food in the field? This course will introduce students to gourmet skills that can be used in the backcountry, including the use of dutch ovens and twiggy fires.

Course Fee: $375. All group camping equipment and food is included. The first class meeting will be held on campus in Bartels Hall, room B01. Other classes will first meet at Bartels Hall and then travel to other areas around Ithaca, NY. This class does have an overnight (11/16/2024-11/17/2024) which leaves at 10:00am Saturday. Transportation is provided.

PE 1610 - Backpacking in the Finger Lakes
Escape from campus to explore the glens, gorges, wooded hills, waterfalls, vistas and trails of the Finger Lakes region. Learn basic outdoor living skills, including hiking, navigation, equipment selection and use, camping, backcountry cooking, and safety.

You must fulfill course requirements in order to receive the reimbursement).The first class meeting will be held on campus in Bartels Hall, room B01. Other classes will first meet at Bartels Hall and then travel to other areas around Fingerlakes region. This class has two overnight weekends (9/28/2024-9/29/2024; leaving at 10am Saturday -- and 10/4/2024-10/6/2024; leaving at 5pm Friday). All group camping equipment and food is included (tent, stove, fuel, cooking pots, etc.).

PE 1613 - Wilderness Survival Skills
Learn what you can do to feel comfortable spending a night alone in the backcountry with limited resources. This course covers general backcountry safety, shelters, signaling, water and food procurement, navigation, and fire starting, as well as nature observation skills and local natural history.
Choose one lecture and one field studies.

PE 1615 - Introduction to Circus Arts
The circus arts are an exciting hybrid of art and sport. In this class you'll dive deep into the basics of a multitude of circus disciplines, including aerial apparatus (aerial fabric, lyra, and trapeze) partner acrobatics, handstands, juggling, and tight wire. The circus arts have been proven to increase brain matter, develop executive function, improve physical fitness, build strength, and create community. No experience is necessary to participate, and all skills can be modified for different levels of fitness.

PE 1620 - Wilderness Advanced First Aid
This is a 4-day, 40 hour course accredited through the Wilderness Medical Associates. Wilderness Advanced First Aid is comprehensive medical training designed for remote professionals or wilderness leaders who venture into remote and challenging environments. Wilderness Medicine differs significantly from standard first aid courses and other training that are oriented toward urban environments.

Course fee: $450. This is part one of a multi-semester course. Part one is an orientation meeting in November 2024, part two runs from January 14-17, 2025 from 8:00am - 6:00pm. You must attend part one in November in order to take part two in January. Students enrolled in this course who are living on-campus will need to find off-campus accommodations until the residential halls open. Participation in all class sessions is required to receive PE credit.

PE 1621 - Bridge Wilderness Advanced First Aid to Wilderness First Responder
This is a 4-day, 40 hour course accredited through the Wilderness Medical Associates. The WAFA to WFR Bridge course upgrades the Wilderness Advanced First Aid to a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) in 4 days. This course must be taken within 3 years of receiving the WMA International WAFA certification or an equivalent from another provider. The WFR is the definitive medical training course for all outdoor professionals and enthusiasts.
