Cornell University

Aquatics - Spring 2026

Notes on Scuba Courses:

Swim Test: All beginning scuba classes require a swim test that is separate from the University swim test. This test consists of swimming 200 yds. continuously and then treading water for 10 minutes. If a student cannot perform this test, they should not register because it is a prerequisite for the course.

Drop Policy: For all classes this must be done by the published drop date. After that, only medical excuses will be accepted to drop the course. All others will be charged the full course fee, a late drop fee and given a failing grade, if applicable.

Cut Policy: The following policy has been instituted for scuba diving courses: 1) no absences are allowed; 2) anyone arriving more than 15 minutes late for a class session may not be allowed to continue in the course at the instructor's discretion; 3) if a student is not allowed to continue or completely misses a class, they will be dropped from the course with no refund.

Pacing:  We cannot guarantee that all confined water dives will be completed during class due to different learning paces. All Open Water classes are referral only, and completion and certification are not guaranteed. There are PADI standards that need to be met, and we cannot move on until they are.

Equipment: All students are required to provide their own mask and snorkel for all classes. These may be purchased from the department during class orientation for $40 via bursar.
