Jessamyn Perlus (she/her): Hi, this is Jessamyn Perlus, and I am providing an overview tour of the Career Development Toolkit maintained by Cornell Career Services. JP: This is our home page, and the easiest way to join the tool kit is to scroll down, look for the big red box, and click the direct link to the Career Development Toolkit. Alternatively, we also have under our resources tab a canvas page which will take you here. This describes what the tool is. The fact that we won a few awards for it, and gives you direct links to each module that we currently maintain JP: and some recommendations from us to view it in Chrome or Firefox to enable you to see all the great features. JP: We have information about how to gain access. If you're a Cornell student, you can just self enroll yourself or accept our invitation that you'll get in July of each year if you're a new student and you can join and leave at any time you want. JP: Alumni are able to access the Toolkit. You just have to click 2 links, and then you're there. And for anyone with a NetId like a faculty or staff member, you can also enroll as a student if you'd like to see the resources there. JP: We also have some additional canvas courses, such as our Campus Recruiting tutorial. JP: There's some frequently asked questions at the bottom, too, about the Toolkit and some challenges you might be experiencing or wondering about. But once you click on that Toolkit link, it'll take you here to our home page, the Career Development Toolkit in canvas. We created this in 2020 to have one convenient single source of information for students and alumni that was available 24/7. And we really tried to build something that was interactive and incorporate real student stories and real examples. So it's more than just a website or something you can Google. JP: So this is the toolkit homepage. Once you've joined, it'll show up in your Courses. We've organized it around this career development wheel. Starting with, understand yourself, explore options and take action. So you'll see those colors and that language throughout the Toolkit. JP: We also make use of some features in the Toolkit, for example, a calendar feature. We'll show you upcoming career fairs. But the main Toolkit page is your jumping off point for each of our 20 plus modules. You can read the titles, Readiness, Assessment, Exploration, as well as some industry, specific modules that we're starting to roll out, such as Consulting, Data Science, and Entrepreneurship. JP: I also want to point out that we have information about career support available at Cornell, and this very last link here goes to our acknowledgments page, which shows the over 70 people who have created and contributed and reviewed shared their expertise in the pursuit of building this Career Development Toolkit. I want to thank everyone who's been involved there. But if we jump back to the home page, one thing that I like to make sure every one is aware of JP: is if you click the resources JP: page that's going to take you straight to our Top Links page. I recommend bookmarking this one. So this is going to be the Cornell specific URL to all of our resources, a lot of which Cornell has subscribed to and purchased for the benefit of students. So you have links to CUeLINKS and some of the other newer ones. We have CaseCoach, the Cornell Outcomes Dashboard. So this is a really great tool to JP: be aware of and bookmark, and continue to use. JP: And I would like to show you some JP: what it actually looks like when you're in a module. So if you click that home page button, for example, on Self-Assessment, how to better understand yourself and why that's helpful in career decision-making. JP: You can see, we have a timing estimate. It's gonna depend on each person. And then we have a table of contents usually broken into 2 parts. So you can start to see the jumping off points and some follow up steps. So there's multiple ways to navigate through. But usually you're gonna click this next JP: button to take you to that first page. then we have additional sort of benchmark JP: navigation circles. So if you wanted to jump ahead to Tips and Tools or go back to that intro page. You're welcome to do that JP: as well. But most folks are just using the "previous" and "next" buttons at the bottom. JP: So each page tells you a little bit about JP: the career idea and then there's built in activities. So this one is just a flip card, and it says "there's only one career in the world that is right for me," and we try to bust those myths. You could be successful at a lot of careers. And here's some resources or follow up steps. So as you go throughout the Toolkit, you'll see more and more JP: ways to interact or test your assumptions when it comes to career and the world of work. JP: So this is another sample page telling you a little bit more about vocational skills. Many pages have multiple tabs. Be sure to click all the tabs before you hit that next button. Some have built in activities where you're just brainstorming to yourself. JP: Some have activities where you type in answers, for example. a a specific skill that I possess might be Excel and self management skills JP: might be organization. JP: So you can type in answers. It's got some suggested ones there, create a document, export it, and continue to work on it. So the more you're interacting with JP: with the different activities. There's helpful things there. In the Self-Assessment module. The fourth tab is where you'll find links to all of the assessments that could be beneficial to you as you're navigating different resources. So Self-Assessment is a really great JP: jumping off point. And you can start to see some of those different interactive pieces. On the next page JP: we start to talk about values and how they'll show up- help shape your career decision-making. So here is different versions of an activity where you might copy something that's important to you, add the value, and then continue through on the next page, where you can rank etc. JP: So I'll move on and show a couple other modules, but each module JP: in the Tips and Tools, page, we'll restate the important points or the learning outcomes. Take you directly to websites and kind of summarize it, and invite you to have a follow up appointment with a career advisor to continue exploring the topic of the module. JP: A couple other modules to point out include networking, as you can see from the module titles we have everything from How do I even get started? Two pages on, step by step, how to build your LinkedIn. We get a lot of questions about that as well as CUeLINKS. That's our JP: people- PeopleGrove platform here at Cornell, where you're able to network with alumni and current students. Then we have information about informational interviews, elevator pitch, how to make it less intimidating, getting professional photos. So, we try to incorporate everything that JP: you might be thinking about in your own career journey there. JP: In the resumes module JP: which is our most popular module. This is where we have all the Cornell specific templates. So these are, in word document form, you can download them. You can see what's special about industry, specific modules or see a lot of samples. We really like to throw real examples out there of some of the things we know our students are engaged in, such as athletics or teaching assistant research assistant things like that study abroad. So this is another good one to JP: Bookmark. JP: Later on, in the module, we have a LOT about bullet points, lot of sample things, lot of action words, will walk you through every part of building your resume. But we also have again incorporated fun activities, so you can choose between JP: L-E-D or L-E-A-D. Led or lead to fill in a blank. Check it, get that feedback right away, and keep going. So it's designed to be JP: fun. And the common examples that we're seeing from the resume reviews that we're doing with students. Here's more examples there. So check it out, interact with it. If it feels like that's a way that's gonna help you retain some of that information. JP: I'll point out a few other ones. We have a Job Search module that walks you through everything, from how to JP: navigate that search. How do I get started? We also have diversity specific resources. So this one is more about how to find inclusive employers questions you might be asking, reflecting on what you want to see in your future workspace and more resources to keep checking that out. We also have a page about identity-related Job Search, support. A lot of resources depending on how you might identify. So this is another good one. JP: If you're considering one or more of your identities in your job search. JP: We've separated Job Search from Job Applications. The applications module is really about, now that I found something I know I want to apply for, what do I do? So this talks a bit about something you may have heard of called the applicant tracking system, ATS. We have 3 pages about What is it? Who's using it? Why do I need to know what it is. How can I use what I know to craft a really thoughtful resume really tailored to the position? JP: So this is a topic that we get a lot of questions about as well JP: Would like to point out that we also have a Portfolios module. The first half gives a big picture overview of what kind of content might go in there. How do you write your sample biography? Things like that. And then the second half of the module is specific to certain fields. JP: For example, this one is architecture. So we have videos built in there. And we also have real student samples for students who volunteered to share their resources. So you can click through and get more ideas and inspiration. And if you want to share yours, just email career@cornell.edu we are always looking for more JP: examples. JP: We have a Job Offers module that one talks you through. The negotiation process thinking about salary. We have a lot about choosing to negotiate, literally what might you say if you're in that process, how to wrap up? What are some common things. We've got videos embedded in there that are helpful to see it in action. So those are some of our big picture overview modules. That mimic the JP: career exploration wheel about, going from understanding yourself to taking action. JP: We also have the Handshake module. This is a new one. This takes you through step by step, section by section, how to use Handshake, which is a system you're going to need for finding jobs, internships, knowing about events and career fairs, finding employers and signing up for campus interviews. So it's a really crucial tool for JP: your future career needs. So these have some tips. For example, on this page. It walks you through some hints about how to use Handshake for the event features to find the ones that are really the most relevant to you JP: and narrowing things down, signing up, registering. So you're feeling like you're not missing out on something that could be relevant JP: to you. JP: If I go back to the home page. You'll see, like I mentioned, that we have those industry-specific modules, Consulting, Data Science, etc. Those JP: we made in part with feedback from experts in the field, including alumni. So if you're an alum, you can go to CUVolunteer and sign up to review. We would love to hear your personal stories or your tips from being out there doing it. We really welcome those kinds of insights and students report that it's really beneficial for them as well. JP: And here this view is called Module view. This is what I recommend you use on a regular basis within the Toolkit. You can expand all, and you can also find and replace. So if you're coming to this brand new, and you don't know instinctively that the informational interview questions are going to be in the Networking module. This is the fastest way to find what you're looking for. Keyword search. Where's that LinkedIn Page? It'll take you right to it. So JP: jumping from the home page to the module view is a really common thing that students are doing. I have JP: of 2 more tips definitely bookmark the Toolkit in your toolbar. You can keep referring back to it. Do it as much as you want. There's no homework or quizzes built in. It's really for you to figure out to have things there when you need it. JP: You can edit your course notifications if you're feeling like you're getting too much from us or not enough. That's another tip that can help you get the most out of the Toolkit. There is a feedback survey that you're welcome to do to help us keep improving and build more interactive tools. And the Toolkit is really a great jumping off point to have future JP: meetings with a career services advisor JP: to continue your journey. So the JP: last page I have to share is the Cornell Career Network. So we have a Central Career Services office. In addition to that, there are 60 other individuals throughout the campus who are here and able to help you with your career journey. So see each of their scheduling links find the person that might be best suited for your area or your intended field and use the Toolkit as a jumping off point for those JP: follow-up appointments. So JP: with that I will wrap up. Thank you so much for your time. I hope you really enjoyed the tour, and that you join the Career Development Toolkit.
