Out of this World Campaign

Let's Get Out of This World

The two-week Out of This World campaign has come to a close. Over two weeks in June, we tracked our movement minutes and set out on an intergalactic odyssey.

Collective Minutes

The final total accumulated movement minutes:

241,135

During week 1, participants reported about 100,000 minutes. During week 2, that increased to about 140,000 minutes. This total number is the equivalent of 4,000 hours = 24 weeks = 5.5 months!!

In our total collective time, space-related objects would travel a wide variety of distances.

  • Objects in low Earth orbit, like the International Space Station or the Space Shuttle, would orbit Earth about 2,500 times, while satellites in higher orbits would only orbit Earth 150-300 times.
  • The Earth itself would travel 430 million miles / 690 million kilometers along its orbit around the sun.
  • Uncrewed spacecraft, like the voyager probes, would travel about 150 million miles / 240 million kilometers.
  • Light would travel an astonishing 2.7 trillion miles / 4.3 trillion kilometers.

Space Factoid of the Day

NASA astronauts will participate in a spacewalk outside of the International Space Station on June 30th, 2026. It is estimated that they will need about 6.5 hours to repair a robotic arm. You can watch live coverage of the spacewalk!
