Refrigerator availability for Fall 2020 Campus Residents
Anticipating a move toward more and more takeout-style meals for Fall 2020, Cornell has been working to make refrigerators available to all students in our campus residences. Our buildings have always had shared kitchens with refrigerator space available, but we believe students will need more space this year.
We made an effort to outfit every residence hall room with a dorm-sized refrigerator or microfridge combination, but we've learned there's a nationwide shortage of these, and haven't been able to secure the thousands we needed. We’re currently working on alternate solutions for refrigeration that can be accomplished in the safest manner possible. Many students have already individually contracted with our preferred vendor, MyMicroFridge.com, and the vendor tells us they do still have a limited supply available. Students placing a rental order by August 1 are guaranteed to have their microfridges in their rooms when they arrive.
Students may also choose to rent or purchase a minifridge that meets Cornell's electrical requirements from another vendor; it must use no more than 7.3 amps (840 watts) to start, and 1.4 amps (160 watts) while running. As with any packages, students may ship such items to themselves at their campus addresses, and they will be available for pickup at service centers on campus following move-in, or may choose to use the paid Pre-Arrival Service from Big Red Shipping & Storage to have packages placed in their rooms before move-in.
