Accreditation

Overview

While the Sorority & Fraternity Life Accreditation Program is not new to Cornell, the combined effort of student leaders and office personnel made the experience more concise and easier to manage. The program has evolved to review chapter accomplishments and determine areas of growth. This revised process will allow for student leaders, with the help of advisors, to of identify and tackle systemic issues in their chapters and ultimately provide a better membership experience. In the spring semester, chapters were asked to submit evidence of their accomplishments, identify areas of growth, and ultimately give themselves a score of 1-5 (1 being poor, 5 being outstanding). Chapters were asked to focus on four areas:

  • Community & Inclusion - Dedication to promoting an inclusive community is central to the Cornell Sorority & Fraternity community values. Community incorporates friendship, love, loyalty, and diversity. Organizations should show dedication to inclusive practices in programming and training initiatives. Consider how your organization has incorporated inclusive practices to create comprehensive spaces for students, as well as, the general commitment of members to diversity. Being a part of a fraternity and sorority community is about building relationships not only within your chapter, but also with others within the  community. Each organization will be assessed on its partnerships with other organizations as well as overall community participation.

  • Service & Philanthropy - At our core, organizations are devoted to giving back to their communities through philanthropy, service, and/or advocacy. The universal value of service stands for all forms of service, philanthropic ventures, and mutual assistance. Please consider how your organization involves others in community service and/or philanthropic events outside of the sorority and fraternity community, and include breakdowns the service, philanthropy, and advocacy your organization participates in throughout the year.
  • Programming - Providing inspiring and influential programming to members is paramount to membership growth and success. Please consider how your organization has engaged with tough topics, provided space for impactful conversation, and innovated strategies to achieve the learning outcomes of a program. These programs can be member specific, organizational partnerships, or events open to the entire Cornell/Ithaca community.
  • Leadership & Accountability - Organizations should commit themselves to promoting the personal and professional development of their members through accountability to values. A well-functioning organization can be attributed to strong leadership and engaged members who are capable of holding their peers accountable for their actions. Please determine how your organization has shown integrity through respect for others, courage by empowering all members to lead, and honor by taking responsibility to hold individuals accountable for their actions. Consider how the organization integrates and promotes personal and professional leadership development and harm reduction strategies into organization events and activities in an effective manner.

The scoring process involved the chapter's identified score, the council advisor's score, and an undergraduate peer representative from the respective council. Scores were determined based on the criteria listed above. The three scores were averaged to determine the chapter score in each category. Overall scores are determined by adding the four category scores together. The highest possible category score is a 5 and the highest possible overall score is a 20.
